What have you gained from your experience as a student cadre at both QMES and NWPU?
I have conducted extensive exchanges with students from brother colleges and universities, and also contacted relevant business enterprises through these platforms. My writing ability of official documents, organization and coordination ability have gradually improved along the way. I have also met many outstanding student cadres. We grow together in mutual exchanges and discussions. Serving as a student cadre is the recognition from QMES of my own ability, but the principle of our work is still the dedication and service to the majority of students.
Do you have any advice for fellow students in terms of social practice activities?
The first step of social practice is the formation of a team. The second is to determine the theme of the practice. The themes of social practice are usually divided into two categories. One category is to keep up with the times, for example, the practice of Celebrating the Centennial of the Founding of the Communist Party. The other category is themes attract widespread concern like volunteer teaching and response to COVID-19. The third is to contact the counselors.

During his tenure, he adhered to the purpose of serving the students wholeheartedly, promoting the reform of the student union of QMES and building a three-level linkage mechanism of “University-College-Class”. He strengthened the communications with students to solve their problems and relieve their stress and anxiety. He also organized “Time Shining, Dream Sailing” welcoming party and online “New Year’s Eve Celebration”, which has attracted 17,400 online viewers and got praise from teachers and students.
How do you adhere to the philosophy of serving classmates wholeheartedly?
“Serving students wholeheartedly” represents a real responsibility and obligation. To join the party, we must correct the motivation. It’s also a must to correct motivation to become a student cadre. Only when student leaders regard devotion as the purpose of their work, can they correctly deal with the gains and losses of personal interests and serve students without complaint or regret. In addition, it is necessary to be enthusiastic about the student work, because intense passion is the source of dedication. At the same time, we need constantly to strengthen sense of service, improve our service skills and make the thought of serving classmates wholeheartedly become our firm beliefs and fundamental principles for our words and actions.
What’s the most impressive in the process of epidemic prevention and control at NWPU?
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Xi’an, I have actively participated in the epidemic prevention and control at NWPU as both an organizer and a participant. During the process, what impressed me most was that students were still so enthusiastic to participate in volunteer service when the epidemic was the most severe. The recruitment of volunteer was always completed within a few minutes, students were even so active towards volunteer work of six o’clock in the morning. I deeply feel the commitment of the youth of NWPU. They were not afraid of difficulties during the epidemic. At the same time, the majority of student cadres bravely shouldered responsibilities and actively undertook volunteer management work, coordinating work tasks, completing volunteer recruitment and material allocation and other related work. They also devoted themselves to epidemic prevention and control, giving full play to the exemplary and vanguard role.
Top Ten Class Leader—Xu Weihang
Xu Weihang, a 2020 undergraduate student majoring in Materials Science and Engineering at QMES, is currently the head of the new media publicity center of the student union at QMES, director of the ISA new media department. He also produced the official anti-epidemic MV “Against the Wind” of NWPU as the director during the epidemic and participated in the filming of the Beijing Film Academy micro-film “A Letter to V” awarded Xianli Prize.
What do you think of the importance of extracurricular experience?
In my opinion, rich growth experience has given me a clearer plan for my future development. I have learned to observe and understand the world from multi-dimensional perspectives. NWPU has provided me with a broad stage to fully demonstrate my strengths and talents. In addition, English is a tool for me to listen to the world. My English language ability has been greatly improved through the activities of the Youth English Speech Club and Model United Nations of NWPU.
What drives you to keep exploring your media skills?
During the epidemic in Xi’an in early 2022, I undertook the job of creating anti-epidemic videos for NPU and QMES. As the chief director of the MV “Against the Wind”, I went deep into the life of students who were fighting against the epidemic. I recorded the scenes with video and gathered them into a vivid “anti-epidemic picture” to show the society the commitment of the students of NWPU. It was this kind of determination to deliver positive energy that drove me to keep exploring in the field I as keen in, and to play a pioneering and exemplary role as a student cadre, setting an example for my classmates.
