Queen Mary Engineering School, NPU Held an English-taught Exchange Seminar
In order to ensure the high-quality English teaching of QMES, promote the further development of international education, and create an academic atmosphere of mutual exchange and communication, QMES held an English-taught Exchange Seminar in Lecture Hall 410, East Teaching Building A, Chang’an Campus of NPU on March 26, 2021, which was presided over by Professor Zhang Juan.
Associate Professors Zhang Junliang, Zhang Biao and He Yixuan were invited by QMES to simulate the English teaching on the spot.Associate Professor Tao Yi from Ande College, University of South Australia, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Professor Zhang Juan from School of Mechanics, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Professor Chen Kaijie and Associate Professor Shi Xuetao from School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and Teacher Timothy Kingham from School of Foreign Studies, as the evaluation experts, exchanged and discussed the related issues of English teaching. Vice Dean Fan Xiaoli participated in this Exchange Seminar.
Combined with a comprehensive and diverse teaching model. The three teachers performed an all-English classroom simulation within 10 minutes, demonstrating their profound knowledge reserve and excellent teaching ability.Zhang Junliang, teacher ofPolymer Characterization, briefly introduced Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC).He started the lecture from several aspects, such as the material size of polymer, the temperature of glass transition, the relationship between temperature and chain length, and the function of GPC, which strengthened students’ understanding of GPC.
Zhang Biao, teacher ofPolymer Characterization, introduced the spectral analysis from five aspects: the introduction to spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. He used humorous language and borrowed some ancient Chinese idioms to vividly explain the spectral analysis of polymer, turning the abstract into the concrete, so that the students could grasp these concepts more clearly.
He Yixuan, teacher ofThermodynamics and Phase Transition, introduced the binary eutectic phase diagram in detail from the basic concepts, the analysis of phase diagram, the characteristics of eutectic reaction, and phase transition, so that students could have a deeper understanding of the relevant knowledge of phase diagram and eutectic reaction.
Several professors present highly appreciated the teaching methods of these teachers and gave pertinent comments and constructive opinions around their teaching methods, classroom organization, courseware, blackboard writing, and teacher-student interaction, etc. Meanwhile, several student judges also expressed their own views and suggestions. The exchange meeting ended successfully in the mutual exchange between teachers and students.
This activity is the “entry” part of teaching at QMES, and every teacher of QMES needs to pass the examination of the trial lecture. In the international education environment, teachers’ high-level teaching is the fundamental guarantee of teaching quality. It is also the establishment and improvement of a comprehensive selection and evaluation system for top talents. This is the key for NPU to help the construction of international teaching staff, promote quality education, and implement the spirit ofthe Overall Plan for Deepening the Reform of Education Evaluation in the New Eraandthe 14th Five-Year Plan.
