QMES Launched the 2023 Summer School Programs Successfully

On August 6, the 2023 QMES Summer School Project opened smoothly. 102 students from QMES went on a two-week exchange trip at QMUL.

The students set out with full expectations and arrived in London by flight with the leading teachers. Under the guidance of the teachers and volunteers of QMUL, they finished enrollment and dormitory registration, and received Student ID, project materials and clothing. The students were touched by the enthusiasm from their Alma Mater in the UK.

On the morning of August 7, the welcome ceremony was held at the School of Engineering and Materials Science. First of all, Vice Dean James Busfield, gave a speech, extending a warm welcome to the students and teachers who participated in the summer school. He pointed out that the summer school focused on cultivating students’ independent and critical thinking, and expected everyone to vigorously improve their learning skills and professional literacy through course learning and practice.

Gabriel Cavalli, Executive Vice Dean of QMES, introduced the basic information of the school, including its long history and the overall arrangement of the summer school, hoping that in the next two weeks, the students will have a better understanding of materials science, deep learning and other knowledge. Afterwards, teachers Luqman and Li Wang, who were in charge of the project, introduced the project schedule, learning requirements and precautions in detail, which laid a good foundation for the smooth operation of the two-week activities.

After the welcome ceremony, the teachers set questions and arranged a “treasure hunt” activity to help students adapt to the study life at QMUL as soon as possible. The students familiarized themselves with the campus environment by searching for clues, recording results and answering questions. Faith Nightingale noted that QMUL creates a good environment for students’ personal growth and all-round development, and students will benefit from advanced facilities, rich library resources and sound learning atmosphere. The teachers is going to use interactive teaching methods and share interesting cases to help students expand their professional knowledge and broaden international view, and wish them excellent results in this summer school.

In the afternoon, all the teachers and students, led by Alastair Owens, a teacher from the Department of Geography, visited the campus to learn more about the history of QMUL, the relevant local history and culture, various infrastructures and usage methods. The sensible and interesting arrangement makes every student look forward to the stay at QMUL.

In the first three days, the students quickly adapted to the study life of QMUL. In the following two weeks, students will work on team projects and give presentations under the guidance of teachers and teaching assistants. The course will also help students acquire cutting-edge knowledge, develop scientific research ability and enhance innovation awareness through interactive and practical projects. It is hoped that the students can truly put the theme of the program into practical action, gain something in scientific research and study at QMUL, improve the ability of adapting overseas life, and have a precious memory in their life resumes.
