QMES Held a Meeting on Helping Students with Academic Difficulties
On March 21, 2023, QMES held a meeting on helping students with academic difficulties at Conference Room 413, East Teaching Building A, Chang’an Campus. Fan Xiaoli, Dean of QMES; Dai Fuping, Secretary of the QMES Party Committee; Cheng Yin, Deputy Secretary of the QMES Party Committee and Vice Dean; Zhou Yongcun, Assistant to the Dean of QMES; directors of Teaching Affairs Office, Student Affairs Office and General Affairs Office; members of the Student International Development Center and Education Manager attended the meeting with Fan Xiaoli as the host.
At the meeting, Zhou Yongcun conveyed the spirit of the Undergraduate Teaching Meeting for the 2022-2023 Spring Semester. According to the requirements of NPU, QMES should reflect on the achievements, advantages and disadvantages in the four aspects of education resources, awards, education reform projects and education quality in 2022, learn from famous teachers, and take various measures to deal with the new situation and problems in 2023 based on teaching reality. Besides, the school should highlight ideological and political education, optimize the talent training program, regularly conduct self-inspection and effectively improve the undergraduate education and teaching.
Yang Ye reported the new working mechanism in charge of academic affairs and the arrangement of helping students with academic difficulties. In order to further improve the integration of teaching and learning, Teaching Affairs Office has set up four staffs from the office. The four are responsible for the teaching affairs of freshmen to seniors respectively, such as course selection, academic warning and assistance with students’ learning difficulties. At present, they carry out their work smoothly and orderly. Teaching Affairs Office has formulated specific measures to help students with difficulties in their studies, worked out the lists of most failed courses and academically disadvantageous students in junior and senior years, and assisted students in the establishment of course guidance groups. QMplus is adopted by the school to download course materials, exercises and class-related videos and upload them to the guidance group, which is convenient for students to review at any time. The four staffs collected the difficult problems encountered by students in course learning and self-study, sorted them out and sent them to the teachers, and made appointments for one-to-one tutoring to answer questions for students with academic difficulties.
Fan Xiaoli put forward two requirements. First, it is necessary to make this new working mechanism scientific and effective. The four staffs should conscientiously fulfil their responsibilities, perform regular self-examination, clarify their thoughts and make timely improvements, so as to do a good job of helping students with academic difficulties. Second, it is crucial to strengthen the communication among departments, optimize the integrated working mechanism, innovate working methods, improve the quality and effect of the integrated work and continuously upgrade the education and teaching of the school.
Dai Fuping said that thanks to the special discussion on helping students with academic difficulties, QMES will make sensible plans in education and teaching, earnestly implement the student-centred and education-oriented philosophy, consolidate the achievements made by the all-member work mechanism, further stimulate students’ learning enthusiasm, facilitate the talent training to a higher level, and contribute to the high-quality development of Chinese-foreign cooperative education of NPU.
