In order to effectively improve the QMES’s educational standards, enhance the English teaching abilities of faculty, and ensure the quality of teaching, on March 29, 2024, QMES held a teaching trial seminar in English at Room B2-402, East Teaching Building Block B, Chang’an Campus, NPU.
This seminar featured live demonstrations of English-only lectures by Li Wei from the School of Mathematics and Statistics and Wei Bingyan from the School of Physical Science and Technology. The judges included Zhang Juan from the School of Mechanics, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Yan Yi from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Faith Nightingale from QMUL, and three students from the Class of 2023. Participants engaged in collaborative discussions and shared their views on English-only teaching.
Firstly, Li Wei delivered an impressive mock lecture titled “Separation Equation.” Using the example of a fighter jet as an introduction, she succinctly explained the basic concepts and derivation process of separation equations. Utilizing a PPT with relevant, up-to-date examples, she effectively captured the students’ attention. Through her clear and accessible explanations, she elaborated on the computational challenges and formulas involved in separation equations, significantly enhancing the student’s understanding and mastery of the module’s core content.
Wei Bingyan, teaching the Experiments module of “General Physics”, focused her lecture on “The Speed of Sound.” Starting with phenomena easily observable in students’ daily lives, she introduced the concept of standing waves. Through question-and-answer sessions and interactive methods, she deepened students’ understanding and memory of relevant knowledge points. Subsequently, Wei Bingyan detailed the standing wave equation and the formation of Lissajous figures under different phase differences, visually demonstrating the derivation process of wave function formulas through diagrams and chalkboard explanations.
The review experts highly praised the English level and teaching methods of the two teachers. They provided constructive suggestions on the content structure and layout of the slides, blackboard design, and module structure. The student shared their listening experiences and provided feedback and suggestions to the two teachers.
As a “pre-entry” session for the QMES teaching, this English teaching trial assessed various aspects of the teachers, including their ideological and political capabilities in the module, English language expression ability, professional knowledge level, and classroom organization skills. QMES used this seminar as an opportunity to enhance the faculty’s professional quality and teaching level in English, build a high-level international teaching team, and contribute to improving the international education quality of the university.
